Mines are under increasing pressure to plough back value into the communities they operate in. This is evidenced by increasingly stringent legislation, national policy as well as commitments made by the mining houses to increase spending on social upliftment. Most organisations that are ISO 14 001 certified have also made some commitment to environmental education in their constituent communities. GGC have developed a program that provides schools with environmental education, and that initiates interschool competitions to improve their school environments. These competitions are area specific depending on the particular needs and problems of schools in the area. The aim is on having fun, learning in the process and improving the environment in and around schools. |
