2009-03-23 Coal Mining Threatens South Africa's Water Supply Acid pollution as a result of coal mining poses a serious threat to South Africa's already strained water supply, according to academics and public advicacy groups.
According to Professor Terence McCarthy of the school of geosciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, proposals to mine in an area northwest of Ermelo, where the Vaal River originates, will likely degrade the water the water in this area to the point where it will no longer be fit for human consumption.
Dr Morne du Plessis, chief executive of the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) in South Africa warned that at current rates of supply and consumption, the country would run out of fresh water by 2025.
