2009-03-23 Air Pollution in Cape Town a Serious Problem The City of Cape Town is changing its "outdated" air pollution bylaw, which it says is "not hitting hard enough" at offenders who release noxious gases into the environment.
It is the latest of several zero-tolerance steps taken by the city council in its bid to make Cape Town "the African city with the cleanest air".
James Vos, chair of the council's health portfolio committee, said at Wednesday's launch of the first Air Pollution Awareness Day: "This is an urgent problem because air pollution is a key factor to the health of a city, represents a major health risk to our citizens and also portrays Cape Town in a negative way to visitors, tourists and residents."
