The Environmental Laws Amendment Act 44 of 2008 became active on the 11th of September 2009. The Act amends various environmental Acts, herewith a quick indication of the relevant amendments -

• APPA - APPA is now regarded as a specific environmental management act, making it subject to the powers of the Environmental Management Inspectors.   
• NEMA - Non-compliance with a compliance notice issued by an Environmental Management Inspector can lead to a fine not exceeding R5million or 10 years imprisonment or both.
